“Uses of Technologies at the University”

Without a doubt, technology in every area of our lives, plays an essential role. It has made our life much easier, and every new generation that is borned has get accostumed to it at the point that we can´t live without it, things such as television, computer and Internet have transformed in indispensable things in our day by day. But what I am going to write about today, is how and what role plays technology in the university, specifically in the career of Physycal Therapy. In this career the uses and tipes of technology are very varied, in every subject we use different things, common to other careers or stuff that only we, as Physical Therapists, use.

Use of technology in comunication
As students and as common people we need to be connected with our friends, with our classmates and teachers. The use of computers and Internet is indispensable. It is a need and an obligation to be informed about new experiments, new clinical cases and new papers related with a subject or just for “general culture”. At the university we have many computers, where we make all kind of works, from reports (use of Word office) to presentations (use of Power Point). And in the way we have to get connected with our classmates, we need Internet (it works a little bit show in the university library), to see our emails, that is the way we send the our works, both to teachers and classmates.

Use of technology in classes
In class, we use a varied technology, I can clasiffy it in technology use in theorical classes and the one is used in practical classes. Inside the classrooms, there are computers where teachers put their presentations, or a power in order to guide the materias that will be exposed in the class. This presentations or “powers” are proyected with a data in a big screen.
In practical classes we use microscopes to see differents samples of different tipes. For example in Histology, we used microscopes to see samples of body tissues. But there is a practical subject named, “Functional Anatomy”, where we use an instrument that is used only in Physical Therapy (and in Occupational Therapy ocassionally), the Goniometer. It measures osteokinematic movements and it is essential in every class of this subject and in every evaluation to a pacient with range of movement problems.

As you could saw, we use technology in every aspect of our life, specifically in university life, we use different type of things, with the object to make easier all the work we have to do. The technology used in here, can be classified in different ways, one of it, is classifying instrument we use like a common denominator, this is technology that every student use in different careers and universities, and technology or instruments that are own of Physical Therapy, like the goniometer. Of course, in this career we use more medical instruments, but the goniometer is the one used only by phisycal therapists.

Challenges in my discipline and country

Hello my friends today I am going to talk about the challenges in my career and more over, about the challenges that my country needs to solve, in general.

Starting with my career, Physical therapy, I would like to reffer about the challenges in the new curriculum that has been an important thing since the very first day of classes. As the new generation with this curriculum, we have lived all the process of “marcha blanca”, and as a new thing, as a new curriculum, it has many problems or shortcomings.
The level of diffilculty and the demand or requirement of this curriculum, has been a pain in the head during all the year, our challenge as students is to get accustom to it and be able to integrate the information that the teachers give us in every subject, with the objective to be more competent and more complete professionals in the future compared to the previous generations and obviously to other universities, and I think that the objective that the creators thought for this new curriculum will be achieved in the future.
The things that I have mention, will be like a point for the university, at the time to choose a career and a university.

About my country, in my personal opinion I think that there are a lot of points that have to be improved. Starting with the transport or Transantiago theme, it has carried a lot problems since it was inaugurated. But more than that I think our challenge as chilean people it to get organised in some way, to be capable to take a bus like civilized people, as we should be, like forming a line at the time take the bus, to have always the bip charged and not criticisizing the system every time, because we have a big quote of guilty in its poor operation.
Education in our country is a matter that has not been resolved in no aspect, starting for the education given in fiscal schools, I think that the goverment has to invest more time and money to improve the quality of the education that is given there. Touching other education point, there is the PSU theme, it is totally necessary to change the way of evalutation to get a place in the career and in the university we want, it is very well known that some students that get the maximun point in the PSU or obtain a really good score in the test, dye (not literally) at the university, because the PSU isn´t a good way of measuring how much do we know about maths, biology, chemistry, etc.

Well I think it is enough talking for today.
Good bye my friends.
See you.

Improving my faculty

Hi friends, today I am going to talk about my university, specifically of my faculty.

I think my faculty is great, I really wouldn´t do any changes to it. The classrooms i think are good, except for the anatomy auditorium, i think it is too old, it is literally falling to pieces, but the other rooms are great. And what can I say about the library, it is awesome, when i first walked into the library I was kind of shocked, the only thing is that the silence floor is not as silent as it should be.
About my teachers, I think that as here in my faculty, every university and every faculty has bad and good teachers and I think it also depends if you like or not the subject, for instance if you don´t like a specific subject or your career for different reasons, I think that if the teacher is not a motivating person, you will hate even more that subject.
Something I would improve? I would put more green areas in this faculty and eliminate the plague of doves, but nothing more.
Oh! I know what i would take out at once is the well known “Kiosco Rojo”, I think the prices are too high, the stuff that is sold in there is very expensive, the prices should be as low as in “Don Amable”.
Apart from what i have mentioned, I think that my faculty does not need any changes, it is not a beautiful building, but it has special places. In here I feel like relaxed, my friends have a great influence in the way I feel, if i didn´t have any friends, this faculty would be the worest of all.

Well, hope you enjoyed it
See you
Bye.

Hobbies

Hello my friends, today i am going to talk about my hobbies.

My main hobby is swimming, i have swam since i was 8 years old. I started swimming because my mom wanted me to do a sport, and here you have me, every free minute i have, i spend it swimming.
When i was at school, i went siwmming 6 or 7 times a week and in holidays between December and January i trained like 9 times a week. But now that im at the university i dont have as much time as i did before, so i go swimming when ever i can, i try to do it like a regulary thing like 3 times a week, after university, and i am also competing representing my university in this discipline.
What can i say of how it has shaped my personality? Uf in many ways, i have grown up in all aspects because of swimming, there i learned how to be constant, tolerant, how to do work team and the most important thing, how to get over diffilculties, such as when you train to much and then in the competition you didn´t get the mark you nedeed to classify to a southamerican champinship. This sport has bring many joys to my life, there i met my best friends and i have met many countries in trips as a national selection or just a team club trip.

Another hobby, but not as important as swimming is dancing. I love it, i love go dancing with my friends, and one of my frustrated dreams is to be a professional dancer. In the past year, in 2009, i did like a course of tropical dance in Valero´s academy and i learned how to dance salsa, merengue and samba mainly. But it hasn´t shape my personality in any way, is just a passenger hobby, is not one of my priorities, as swimming is.

I hope you liked this blog, see you soon my friends
Bye.

Holiday destinations

Hello my friends, today im going to refer about my favourite past vacations and my next ones.

To start, i would like you to know that my favorite vacations were when i was about 13 years old, a long time ago. I went to different parts, like Concon and Concepción, the funny thing is that i spent it with my beloved australian cousins, Valentine and Olivia. We had a great time together, i have to mention that we spent new year celebrations together, where we burned up like a “person” that represented all the bad stuff that we had lived during that year. After new year celebrations we went to Concon with my parents, where we had a great time, we did a lot of things, we met a lot of new people, and we had a crush with some of them, and it was the time for me in particular to live many new experiences like going alone to a party, like drinking for the first time an alcoholic beverage, apart from that, what i appreciated most is that i spent my holidays with two people that i love very much, unfortunately as you could deduce, i don´t see them very much, cause they live in Australia, but i hope that 2010 holidays will be as much as good as that vacations were or even better, because my big cousin Valentine is coming to Chile en January.

Now im going to write about what im planning to do on my next holidays.
First of all like i said so, in the previous paragraph, my cousin Valentine is coming to Chile so i hope to spend as long as is possible with her. But i have other plans too, i´m saving money because i want to make like a “tour” through 3 cities in southamerica.
I want to go for vacations to Punta del este, Florianópolis and one extra city that i´m not sure which could it be. This trip is planned for February, preferably on the first 15 days. I would do it with two school friends and i don´t really know where are we staying, because it is like a “Mochileo”, so we are going to what fate will bring to us.

That of for today friends, i hope you enjoyed my store.
Bye

“Scientists decode human genome’s instruction manual”

Hi, today i wll write a summary of a veri interesting article i found in a britsh newspaper called The Guardian.

Almost a decade after the human genome project laid bare the building blocks of life, scientists have figured out how they work together to create a living person.
About 25.000 genes are needed to make a healthy human being, but no one has explained how they combine and why they combine to make a person, until now.

California researchers have published like a manual that explains how genes are orchestrated inside cells; the advantages of the work that scientists have developed, is that they think that this work could be useful in many health treatments such as in cancer and mental disorders like squizophrenia.

And as we all now, the specific cellular expression is controlled by chemical switches that turn off and on determined genes; Scientists are also trying to decipher the chemical switches that control the entire expression gene machine, or as they call it, it is the “epigenome”.

A team led by Joseph Ecker at a university in California, studied human skin and stem cells with the objective to complete their first epigenomic map. By comparing this with the epigenome of diseased cells, scientists will be able to work out how glitches in the epigenome lead to cancers and other mental diseases for example. So this work will help to understand how a normal cell differs to a disease cell, which will lead scientists to understand the pathway of various diseases.

Previous studies suggest that everything around us, from what we eat to what we breathe affects our epigenome, leading to the expression of several medical conditions.

To finish the summary I would like to quote Linda Birbaum, director of the National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences “Science has matured to a point that we can now map the epigenome of a cell”.

Transantiago

Hi my friends, today im going to write about a theme, that i think, has made a little bit
of controversy , im talking about the well known Transantiago.

Transantiago has been critized since the very first moment; it started working as the official “micros”. The government has had many problems since that day, even more, Transantiago has been offering its service during 2 years more or less, and nowadays it still makes controversy.

In my personal opinion, i think Transantiago, or rather the people that “control” it, have improved little by little its service, and i also think that, we weren’t prepared for such a change in transport field. Like it or not, Chilean people tend to be disorganized and I think a little conservative, so this new system that came to revolutionize transport matters, didn’t fit well in our life style. I think this an important factor, which explains why Transantiago has carry out so many problems.
Even though, as many new things, it has its failures, for example, the typical problem that people argues of Transantiago, is the discordination in the hours the buses are supposed to stop, they are always out of time, and when they get to the bustop, there are two possibilities, they can be full so there is no chance to get in them or many buses of the same “line,” stop at the same time so a vacuum is generated between one bus and the next.

Apart from this, I think there are no problems in this way of transport, actually there is a page of Transantiago in the web that informs people about everything we want to know, about it, in fact i have visited the page and it explains everything pretty well.

I have no more to say about this theme, hope you liked it.
Good bye

Countries i would like to travel to

Hi my dear friends!

Today i will talk about two special countries i would like to travel to.
The first and the most important one, is Australia. But why there? There are a lot of reasons why I would love to go and live there. When I was like 12 years two of my cousins came to our country to spend their vacations, my cousins were borned in Australia and one of them was about my age, her name is Valentine. We made a lot of promises, one of them was to live together in a department in Australia, in Melbourne specifically, when i turned 18. As you could see, we had to break our promise, because of some reasons that I will not comment here. But my dream of going to live there is still a thing i want to do very much, in fact i´m planning to finish my career here in Chile, and then travel to Australia just to try my luck.
The second country I would like to visit, is Italy, mostly because I think it has many beautiful places to meet, which are part or the universal history. The advantage to travel to a country in Europe is that all countries are very near; just with taking a train we can meet plenty of places and passages in practically the whole continent. But there is a very important thing, to travel to Italy and eventually to other neighbouring countries, it is necessary a lot of money.

And that’s all folks, hope we meet in the next session, good bye.

Hi friends

I would like to introduce my self, my name is maria paz, and i´m new in this blog thing. This term i have an english course in he university, that´s the main reason why im here writting to you.

This time i would like to talk about my experiences during the first term of this year, 2009.
Last term had lot of bad and good experiences, luckyly the good ones were the most. First of all, you´ll have to know that this year i started a new career, Physical Therapy. I decided to study this during school, unfortunately, the score i got in PSU, wasn´t enough to enter to this career, in this university. But here you have me, writting to you about my experience in this new path.
Many changes in my life ocured, since i enter in this career. I have met a lot of great people, my classmates are exeptionals in all aspects. In the academic part, i founded last term very difficult, at least for me. I passed all courses, but i studied a lot for all of them, actually in one of signatures, the one i hated the most, i had to take the second oportunity exam. On the other hand, in my free time, apart from spending it studying, i tryed, to hang out with my friends as much as i could, and as much as my body could support, the “rate” of the university was very stressing. Back with the other theme, of how i spended my free time, about two times a week i went to swim, because i´m a kind of elite swimmer, at least when i was in school, and my schedule allowed my trainig six or seven times a week.

In general, this was my life during last term, hopefully, we will meet again in a new blog session.
Good bye.
